Ferring Bets Up to $1.38 Billion on Faster, Gentler IVF With Gameto Deal

Fertility care has produced one of the most interesting deals of the autumn. Ferring Pharmaceuticals, the privately owned Swiss company best known for its fertility drugs, said on 27 October that it had agreed to acquire Gameto, a New York biotech, in a transaction worth up to $1.3825 billion.

Ferring did not disclose the upfront payment. A large part of the headline value depends on Gameto reaching development, regulatory and commercial milestones, and the deal still has to meet closing conditions. Until then, the two companies will operate independently.

    What Ferring Is Buying

Gameto’s lead product is Fertilo, which uses support cells grown from stem cells to mature eggs in the laboratory rather than inside the body. Conventional IVF and egg freezing rely on roughly two weeks of hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries. Gameto says Fertilo can shorten that to as little as three days, with fewer injections, lower drug costs and less risk for patients.

Fertilo is already used in clinics in Australia and parts of Latin America, including Argentina, Peru and Mexico. In the US it is still investigational, and a Phase 3 trial is enrolling around 500 participants. That trial compares Fertilo with existing laboratory egg maturation methods, not with standard IVF, so the full commercial case is still to be proven. Gameto had raised roughly $120 million to $127 million from investors before the deal.

For Ferring, the logic is reach. Its products are already used in fertility clinics around the world, and it can take a newly approved product to those clinics quickly. Bloomberg reported that Ferring expects its distribution network to make Fertilo widely available if it wins approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. Gameto chief executive Dina Turner is expected to take an advisory role after completion.

A Fast-Growing Market With Corporate Buyers

The deal fits a broader shift. People are starting families later, egg freezing has gone from rare to routine, and IVF demand is rising across the US, Europe and Asia. Employers have become major funders: fertility benefits are now a standard part of the package at many large companies competing for talent, and specialist benefit providers have grown rapidly on the back of that demand.

Technology that cuts the time, drugs and clinic visits involved in a cycle could make treatment cheaper per patient and easier to fit around work. It could also increase the number of people who try it, which would raise total spending even as unit costs fall.

The deal structure is telling too. Paying a modest sum upfront and most of the value on milestones is now the standard way for larger companies to buy promising but unproven technology. The seller gets a route to market and the buyer limits its risk if the US trial disappoints.

The BusinessIQˣ View: What It Means for Employers and Dealmakers

The impact. Employers that offer fertility benefits, and those deciding whether to add them, should expect treatment options and costs to change over the next three to five years. Fertility clinics and benefit providers face new competition on speed and patient experience. For founders and investors in health technology, the deal confirms that large private companies are willing to pay well for differentiated products, but mostly through payments tied to results.

    What to do now:

    1. If you offer fertility benefits, ask your provider how their policies treat newer approaches such as laboratory egg maturation, and whether coverage limits are set per cycle or per outcome.

    2. If you do not offer them, benchmark against competitors for the talent you hire. Fertility support is increasingly expected by employees in their late 20s and 30s, and it influences retention.

    3. Review leave and flexible working policies. Shorter treatment cycles will help, but employees going through IVF still need time for appointments and recovery.

    4. If you are selling a healthcare business or technology, prepare for milestone-heavy offers. Agree in advance which milestones you can control and insist on clear definitions and reporting rights.

Ferring’s bet will only pay off if Fertilo succeeds in its US trial. Even so, the direction is clear: fertility care is becoming a mainstream market, and companies that fund it, sell into it or compete for the people who use it should be paying attention.
